As a society, we often focus on negativities and ignore problems instead of solving issues. This can sometimes cause us to act in the heat of the moment, without thinking it through. A small incident I experienced in traffic recently started me thinking about this issue and prompted me to write this blog.
“As the school minibus driver approached a junction, he noticed that the road was congested. When he was turning at the junction, he stopped suddenly to give way to me and the vehicle in front of me. However, the driver in front of me became angry when he saw that the minibus was partially blocking the road. Believing his path was completely obstructed, he opened his window and shouted aggressively at the minibus driver. The minibus driver had actually stopped to help facilitate the flow of traffic, but the other driver failed to recognise this and instead focused solely on his view of the situation.”
This incident illustrates how people often concentrate on causing problems rather than seeking solutions. Most of the time, the issue we fixate on appears to be an obstacle to finding a solution. Many individuals become so identified with the problem that they do not even notice that the solution is right at the tip of their nose.
One thought that stayed with me after experiencing this incident is that individuals with special education needs are often evaluated solely based on what they cannot do. This perspective comes from their families, communities and even teachers. As a result, their talents may go unnoticed, preventing these abilities from developing. Individuals with special education needs may face more challenges in participating in society and their environments, however their greatest need is for others to focus on what they can do rather than what they cannot. In education, there is often an emphasis on shortcomings and difficulties, yet every individual has the potential to grow based on their strengths. By concentrating on their abilities, we can boost the self-confidence of individuals with special education needs, help them feel valued and maximise their potential. This approach not only facilitates healthier development for individuals in additionenhances their participation in society. When each person can fully realise their potential, they are better equipped to contribute positively to their environment and community.
Positive Psychology and the Education System:
Firstly, let’s explore ways to support the development of individuals with special educational needs within the education system.
Incorporating these approaches into the education system enables individuals to better discover their potential. Furthermore, these methods assist individuals with special educational needs in participating more independently and freely in society. This focus not only addresses their challenges but also emphasises their strengths.
Positive Psychology and the Environment:
An environment that promotes positive psychology and awareness is crucial for the development of individuals with special educational needs.
Empathy, a supportive environment and the right words enable individuals with special educational needs to approach life with a more positive perspective. This mindset not only enhances their personal development but also influences how they contribute to society. It is essential to focus on the strengths of individuals with special educational needs rather than solely on their challenges. Emphasising what they can achieve not only provides emotional satisfaction but also serves as a significant source of motivation in their development. Since each individual possesses unique abilities, it is crucial to recognise and support these talents appropriately. Providing opportunities in areas where they excel boosts their self-confidence and encourages them to participate more independently in life.
Typically, individuals with special educational needs are assessed according to societal norms and patterns; however, each person reveals their potential in different ways. Therefore, concentrating on their strengths not only empowers them but also assists them in becoming valuable members of society. This approach unlocks their potential and promotes greater integration into the community. Creating an educational and environmental model that emphasises the strengths of individuals with special education needs can be beneficial not only for their personal development but also for society as a whole. This model enhances individuals' self-confidence, boosts their motivation and most importantly, helps them become more independent and effective individuals. Additionally, it fosters a more inclusive, understanding, and empathetic society. Transforming society into a structure that accepts differences and supports each individual in realising their full potential will benefit everyone.
It's essential to remember that each person has their unique potential, which can be unlocked with the right support. Focusing on individuals' capabilities is a powerful step in this journey. This approach not only improves the well-being of individuals but also contributes to a fairer, more equitable and supportive society.
